Using FairBillCheck with assistive technology
Effective September 30, 2026
We want everyone to be able to enter a bill, read the free code and locality pages, and use their report, including people who use a screen reader, keyboard, magnification or voice control.
The standard we work to
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we test pages against it when we change them.
What is built in
- A skip link to the main content, and the same landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer) on every page, with one top-level heading per page.
- A visible focus outline on every link, button and form field, and a checkout form that works entirely from the keyboard, including adding and removing bill lines.
- A text label on every form field, with each bill line's fields named by line number for screen readers.
- Error messages written out in words and announced to screen readers, never shown by color alone.
- Text and interface colors that meet WCAG AA contrast ratios, and data tables with proper row and column headers.
- Layouts that reflow at narrow widths and when zoomed, with wide tables scrolling inside their own region.
Known limitations
The PDF report is generated automatically and is not fully tagged for screen readers. The letter from the report is also in the email we send, as plain text, and on request we will send the whole report as accessible text or HTML at no charge.
Report a barrier
If anything on the site or in your report is hard to use, email [email protected] with the page address and what went wrong. We aim to reply within 5 business days and to work with you on a fix or a usable alternative.
